History

Mace started as a registered, “Friendly Society Under the Industrial and Provident Act 1965 and became a “fully mutual” Co-op in 1986.

Mace was established in 1974 as a self-help short-life Housing Organisation to house ‘creative’ individuals and other group people that were homeless. Over time, the Co-op recognised that the “priority homeless list” operated by Local Authorities and large Housing Associations made it extremely difficult for the unemployed single homeless, single low-income earners etc to find any affordable accommodation. In fact, there was and still, a huge housing supply deficit for these and other categories of homeless people in London.

The above-encouraged Mace to re-organise its structure and operations. It developed the concept of “shared accommodation” for the single homeless, to address the deficit in housing supply to single people in London. It has been providing shared accommodation, several homeless people, for over 45 years now.

Several years later, Mace had to adapt to the changes in its operating environment by also housing homeless families after partnership negotiations with local authorities in London. It now houses both the single homeless and families.

The composition of the membership is currently:
Membership (%)
Families 50
Shared housing 50

Mace started as a registered, “Friendly Society under the Friendly Society Under the Industrial and Provident Act 1965 and became a “fully mutual” Co-op in 1986. But it is now registered as a Co-operative under the Co-operative and Community Benefit Societies Act 2014.
Mace is registered with and monitored by the Financial Conduct Authority. It is also a member of the National Housing Federation and, thus, adopted the 2015 Code of Governance of the Federation.

Mace is the proud winner of 2019, London Landlords Accreditation Scheme, Empowering Tenants Award.
